The average dog bite settlement, and why it is not your number
Insurers paid an average of $65,450 per dog bite claim in 2025, according to Triple-I. Most claims settle for far less or far more than that.
A bandaged bite on the hand settles for much less. A mauling with surgery can reach the owner's policy limit, typically $100,000 to $300,000, Triple-I reports. Above that limit, the owner owes the rest personally.
State averages show the spread. In 2024, Georgia averaged $46,724 a claim and New York $110,488. In 2025, New York led again at $92,154, and Connecticut came second at $87,751. Compare your state in the state guides.
Children and scars
About half of dog bite victims are children, the American Veterinary Medical Association says. A face scar on a child carries weight for decades.
It can mean future revision surgery, school photos, and the child's own view of it. Insurers price that in. Read more on when a child is bitten.
Wisconsin goes further. Say the owner knew the dog had already bitten someone, unprovoked, hard enough to scar. A new scarring bite then costs the owner 2 times the damages under Wisconsin statute 174.02.
What raises or lowers dog bite compensation
These details push a claim up:
- Stitches, surgery, or nerve or tendon damage.
- An infection that needed a second round of care.
- A scar on the face, hands or arms.
- A strict liability state, where the owner cannot argue the dog was gentle before.
- Clear records: photos from day one, the bite report, and every bill.
These details pull it down:
- Your own part in the bite. Florida reduces the owner's liability by any negligence of the person bitten.
- Ohio's statute does not cover someone who was teasing or abusing the dog on the owner's land.
- A low policy limit, which caps the money in practice.
- A gap in treatment, or a recorded statement given to the insurer in week one.
Ask the insurer in writing for the owner's policy limit before you discuss any offer. Then call us before you answer it.
Find your own range
The dog bite settlement calculator takes your bills, lost pay, injury and state. It gives you a low and a high range.
Example: Mike in San Antonio had $6,500 in bills and $2,000 in lost pay. An infection and a wrist scar gave him a range of $16,500 to $36,800.
A range is a starting point. Call before the insurer's deadline to respond, and an attorney will weigh your offer against your actual injury.
